The Denmark Festival of Voice
The Denmark Festival of Voice is a small-scale, intimate festival, held every year over the June long weekend in the beautiful south coastal town of Denmark, Western Australia.
A project of Denmark Arts, the Festival is a celebration of the human voice, with a special focus on community singing, and each year brings together an inspiring lineup of local, national and international artists in A Cappella and accompanied ensemble, group and individual performances.
In 2014 the Festival celebrates its tenth anniversary.
Every year hundreds of people come together to watch, listen, learn, laugh, share their stories and sing their hearts out.
Choral, comedy and cabaret; poetry, spoken word and storytelling; sacred music, revolution songs, indigenous and world music, folk, country, jazz, gospel, hip hop and the blues…
DFoV stirs up a heady brew of vocal flavours and serves it up in great dollops in heritage and contemporary venues all within a gentle stroll of each other in the heart of the charming Denmark village.
The Denmark Festival of Voice is an immersion weekend that is all about singing. Everyone that comes along – professional, amateur or enthusiast – gets to join in – and it doesn’t matter whether you have lots of experience or none – DFoV offers something for singers at all levels.
A fantastic range of workshops presents everything from practical skills development in areas including repertoire, harmony, vocal improvisation, stagecraft and presentation to more experiential offerings and cultural explorations.
In 2013, workshops included Portuguese Fado singing, Sound Healing, the Persian Music Tradition, African song and Dance, Sufi invocation and Noongar storytelling.
The Big Sing offers participants the opportunity to learn a song in four-part harmony with an acclaimed choir conductor and to perform it as part of the Festival Finale.
“…a superb, uplifting event!”
